I think the law is being overly vague about "gravity blades"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_knife

A switchblade/auto knife must be started by a button/lever push, not force on the blade itself. Assisted open is NOT automatic; you still have to get the blade going before it opens.

I agree with you dan. I just thought that if knives that can open with a flick of the wrist are for sale, then somewhere the wording of the law must have changed. I have seen these same words concerning the knife law in the past, but just never thought to follow it up.

Basically....If you don't have to touch the blade to open the knife, it is illegal. At least that is what it is referring to. (ie butterfly knife)

how it has been explained to me, is the opening movement must be started by direct contact with the blade material and not by a switch or a button. Spring assisted blades and flippers are legal simply because the action is initiated by your thumb or index finger on the blade itself (obviously not the sharp end)

On the topic of my knives, I just sold the Red Emerson for almost twice what I paid for it 2 months ago!!! jesus! New EDC posts to come for me :D

I have been looking at buying an auto and don't see any problem in obtaining one over the internet. If it is not legal to buy or sell one, how is it possible to find so many for sale? Are there states where the ownership of an auto knife is legal?

California. New York. Illinois, etc... Buying one in a state where it's legal to own isn't the issue, if it's involved in interstate commerce you run into problems. Can't have one shipped to you from out of stat unless you're a vendor/dealer, military, or some sort of law enforcement. Can't ship through USPS, and some other stuff like that. The law can be found here: 15 U.S.C. § 1241–1245
